6 Arizona Criminal Justice Nonprofits
During the holiday season, many people give to charitable organizations. There are a number of nonprofits that help people in the criminal justice system. Here are a few worth supporting:
American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Arizona – This organization takes a multi-pronged approach to fighting mass incarceration. AFSC provides resources for individuals and families, advocates for sentencing reform, documents prison conditions to hold officials accountable to humane standards, opposes private prison expansion, educates the public and policymakers, and more.
David’s Hope – By bringing together law enforcement, criminal justice stakeholders, and community health providers, David’s Hope seeks to divert people with mental illnesses and substance use disorders from incarceration.
Death Penalty Alternatives for Arizona (DPAA) – This grassroots organization focuses on educating the public about issues surrounding the death penalty in order to raise awareness and advocacy for alternative sentencing.
Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM) – Since 1991, FAMM has successfully advocated to reform or repeal mandatory minimum sentencing laws. A nonpartisan, national organization, they have earned the support of taxpayers, judges, law enforcement, attorneys, and the communities they serve.
National Bail Out / Appolition – The National Bail Out initiative was launched by Color of Change and The Movement for Black Lives to help those who cannot afford bail return to their homes, families, and jobs while awaiting trial. With the Appolition app, you can automatically donate to the bail fund whenever you use your debit card.
Read Between the Bars – This volunteer-run organization in southern Arizona collects and distributes books to people in prison. Prisoners can request titles or topics, and the organization uses donations and funds to fulfill requests.
If you have made it your new year’s resolution or holiday wish to support criminal justice reform in Arizona, these are good places to start. Whether you donate cash, volunteer time, or simply take the time to educate yourself about the issues to become a more engaged voter, Arizona families will appreciate it.
